How do u live on $700/month, truly?

Yeah, we have to plan for emergencies, and consecutive ones, and to STILL be able to survive anyway ... with a little leeway to spare because once this year is over, next year's around the corner, and don't you believe next year won't have its own share of unexpected problems ... and the older...

Oh yeah, both physical and truly(not fake dramatic) mental stress rips the bottom out of people's physical and emotional/mental health and lets them plunge down into an endless well that can drown them. Living low accelerates aging dramatically. You can crisply determine longevity by zipcode...

    24/7 Chat About Anything

Freelancers can get immense freedom and vastly more pay that way, at least in the health care industry I'm in now. The truly pushed-down and expendable are the in-house staff, who get paid far less and are generally responsible for more ... and more beholden to the institution. Agency medical...

How do u live on $700/month, truly?

Honestly, 3k seems so incredibly paltry. What if you have not just one, but more than one problem in a year? I have problems pretty often and I hardly drive or do anything at all. I work on them for years on end but then another one just comes up and I'm always back to the tension and...

You are making one solid point after another here, and taking a bit of a risk to do so. Thank you very much for raising important issues that are otherwise easily forgotten or glossed over. I believe Bob is right-on-the-money when he talks about simplifying one's life and getting rid of...

Your level of knowledge of the midwest is greater than mine, as mine equals zero. Just wanted to relate that cheap apartments where I spent my life, in Southern California, are crime hellholes. I guess culture matters? But if so, then we can't apply broad measuring sticks to what it's like...

How do u live on $700/month, truly?

Wonderful frugal approach. A lot of people can't do what you've done, but I bet a lot of people can do it but haven't fully considered or planned for it. I hope more people can put themselves in your position, tough as it is. Because of course it gets much tougher. Best wishes to you, and...

    Any thoughts on crock pots?

I had the cuisinart version, and still treasure my crockpot. Dead simple and cheap, no need to replace anything ever.

    Paranoia

I didn't cite a source and I don't want to back anything up. This is a casual conversation on an internet forum, not a court case, thanks. I've read it numerous times, including I think in Robert Ressler's book on serial killers and many articles over the years. My life does not come with...

Is it okay to even have a pet as you age?

Not at all certainly and definitely not a parrot! Some live for 30 years and more!

Is it okay to even have a pet as you age?

Plenty of other answers, including that a life is a lot more than head of lettuce to me. Isn't it to you? I'm over 60 and taking a course to increase my certifications and better my job level in a field I've been in over a year. I am not living for death, nor afraid of it, for that matter. I...

    Leaving cones/“claiming a spot” boondocking NF/BLM

Unfortunately, sometimes confrontation is very good for the world. It's not my job to save the world, though.

Is it okay to even have a pet as you age?

Oh hell no, not for me. That's what this thread was about. The uncertainty about where you can draw the line when you don't know whether you're going to live for two days or two decades. Which becomes a surprisingly fair question once you hit, say, your 60's.

    Paranoia

Probably in The Gift of Fear, among other places. I read it numerous times.

    Paranoia

Thank you. Starting in the 70's, stats changed so that people getting murdered had no relationship/acquaintance with their murderers. That is actually quite frightening.

So where should I look for a fuller discussion?

    What's for dinner?

This is being a cook and enjoying food, just like anything else. It means you aren't reaching for highly processed food and other junk foods, but are instead eating right. Get a big enough freezer, and you get a rotation going between any number of delicious meals, all the healthier because...
