We've been nomads longer than we've been stationary. Everyone loves travel and road trips, maybe that's a manifestation of our history??

    24/7 Chat About Anything

Managed to burn myself pretty good with some hot slag today. It went down my shirt and cooked my shoulder pretty good. Weirdly, I feel pain when I roll my shoulder, so wondering how deep the burn is. Nothing too serious, all in all.

How did you end up on the road, and why are you still here?

Also, thanks for all the stories. I hope y'all continue to add to the thread. In the end, stories are all that we really have and it is how we will be remembered.

Haven't seen you post in awhile. You doing alright?

    If You Could

For me, it would be to smile more. There's a lot I could say, but I think that probably summarizes it nicely.

Off topic posts split from "How do u live on $700/month, truly?"

Well. I'm in Florida now, and the CoL is really high. I guess maybe its cheaper the more north you go, but I can tell you that the Tampa metro area is ROUGH.

How do u live on $700/month, truly?

$700 a month is pretty tough. I think you're almost better off getting a little bike and an ultra light trailer to pull with it. It would eliminate gas, insurance, and the single biggest risk to such a small income, which is breakdowns/maintenance. The other alternative is to find someone else...

    If You Could

go back in time and tell your younger self something, what would it be?

    Freaking out, head gasket blew

Quite a few mechanics don't know how to properly apply a new head gasket. So it could be that whoever you got that engine from..well, it just decided to let go now. I think your best bet might be a junkyard to see if you can pull something cheaply? If not, maybe get a little beater off CL. Tough...

    Exploitive?

Ah ok, well I'll be sure to run future questions by you first.

I don't know a single individual on my block. I bet that's true for the grand majority. I'd say that qualifies, but ymmv.

How do u live on $700/month, truly?

I mean what's the worst that could happen? Your van breaks and you gotta hoof it? I feel like rotting away wishing, shoulda/woulda/coulda is way worse. You ain't gonna die, but you certainly will live if things go awry.

    Heat in Van/RV/House

If you haven't already, please get a gas detection device in case that propane bottle springs a leak. Its very risky to store propane like that imo.

How do u live on $700/month, truly?

It seems like this thread has been worked over pretty good already. I would add, and not to be discouraging, but it seems like your savings and know-how will be what separates you from doing the nomad thing, vs being up shitcreek with no paddles if your rig has a catastrophic failure, and you...

That sounds like something I'd like to be involved in. Ideally, I'd like to travel with a 'family unit' of a few rigs where we decide where we're going and for what reason, and we go. We are all so fractured and isolated in modern society, and it need not be like that.

Now that's a thought. I may very well adapt your system for travel. I think that's probably about the safest way one could it. Thank you for posting. Also, just curious, but what got you on the road?

That's a good point! Thanks for the comment and giving me something to consider.

    Exploitive?

Just wondering what people think. Do you find films like Nomadland to be exploitive of you and your lifestyle? What about the people that glamourize it on Instagram with their brand new sprinters paid for by dad? It does strike me as mildly exploitive. There are some in our community that are...

    BVan Options (Class B)

I think the topic is worth having, especially for those with a similar wants in a rig, but I'm not sure how much interest you'll find here in brand new class b's.
