Pop up camper , are there wise and safe ?

A pop-up camper for the long term may not be the best option, but for a 2 week period, no problem, certainly better than a tent. I'm going for the same reason you are, to look at as many different set-ups as I can to shorten the learning curve of the travel life. I'll be in a tent because that's...

    Good Cheap Tent for RTR

It depends on the tent you are staking down. A small 2-man tent, then sure. If you have a big, high wall tent with only 4 corner tie downs, then no. How about that same tent with 16 tie down points, probably yes. In the end is a tent the right solution for theses high wind locations, not really.

    Why even use Solar Panels?

If your vehicle is a hybrid, then solar will have little, if any benefit. The gas engine will kick on when needed which might be objectionable for some. The benefit is you get a very efficient electric generator as a bonus to the great mpg. I can run 1500 watts AC from my Prius if I had the need...

    I played with my poop

It's one hole not a fence line full. But yeah be prepared to do the whirly bird if you hit something solid. Lol

I-40 west caravan to RTR 2019

Thanks for the great advise, under normal conditions, this is what I would do. I have limited time and attending the RTR, so with that destination in mind, I'm willing to tolerate the traffic. Three days travel is already a lot, any deviation and it goes to 4 or 5 days which eats up too much of...

    I played with my poop

I guess I should have said it may not work in hard rock soil, oh wait I did. Could also use a gas powered one, they cost way less than a composting toilet and could handle hard soil. A little bit of noise once a week or so. Not too bad.

    I played with my poop

I will admit I haven't read all 19 pages of poo prose, but I will offer what I think might be a better or realistic alternative. (Please not this may not be possible in the rocky soil of the desert.) Get to your spot, auger a 6" x 4 foot deep hole with one of these, place a privacy tent over the...

I-40 west caravan to RTR 2019

I'm not especially fond of interstates, but I have a long way to go and they are the fastest route. If you have an alternative, I would really like to see it, I've never driven through this part of the country. Thanks

I-40 west caravan to RTR 2019

That route takes you through the Rockies and potential bad weather. Might try staying east of the rockies until you get to southern New Mexico and then turn west. I have not driven these roads so this is more of an observation than recommendation.

I-40 west caravan to RTR 2019

That's what I had in mind, fixed nightly stops. If you can deal with the miles and type of campsite, come along, if not, ok, no big deal. Here is an example of a route I'm looking at from Kentucky. I could easily modify this route further south on...

What to do with tuna can juice?

Hand full of kitty litter in the can will soak it all up, then just toss in your trash. Get the scented type.

    New Sprinter options

I see the new US built Sprinters will have a gas engine model and available 4x4. Just what I was hoping for.

    Van versus Car???

Consider a Toyota Prius for the car / tent option. The hatchback is huge, store everything you need, then off load it into the tent at camp. The hatchback can sleep (2) 6'-2" people in AC / Heat all night long with the hybrid engine / electric system. You can also add a 1500 watt inverter to...

    Prius

Just an FYI for other readers. I'm 6'-2" tall and easily fit in a regular Prius. The V has a lot more room but both will sleep a tall person.

I-40 west caravan to RTR 2019

I would like to arrive one day early, Jan. 8th. From my location I was anticipating (2) 10-12 hour days and a shorter 3rd. day into Quartzite. I want to be able to stock up on supplies and find a campsite well before dark. I would consider stretching that to 4 days if necessary.

I-40 west caravan to RTR 2019

Anyone else traveling west on I-40 to the RTR 2019? I'll be traveling west from Kentucky, I pick up 40 in Nashville. Anyone interested in being part a RTR or bust caravan?

    RTR Day 1 ?

Will the RTR be a circus on the first day?  Would it make sense to arrive on the 3-4th day to avoid the traffic?
