    Rocket stove and thermos cooking

Dehydrated wine, like dehydrated water, is ideal for hiking.

Time for a Replacement Van. Struggling...

Looks like the struggle is over, and paralysis (shock) is setting in. We decided on a standard length conversion van, which will be picked up Monday.

Time for a Replacement Van. Struggling...

Your van is two years newer than mine ('96 Express), so we don't have the hump. Today I got a close look at that area on a new Express cargo van, and I think it's something I can deal with.

Nature Lover and friends keep in touch

That is a hoot! BTW, just hearing from you is encouraging. I think of you when I see a bird I don't "know" (most of them, sadly), and when I hear a particularly bad pun!

    Social security

All of this is well said. I especially agree with the bit above, since we all know "generalizations are always wrong".

    Sheeps Wool or Polyiso

I've wondered whether sheep's wool is attractive to rodents, and whether it settles downward over time.

    possibly dumb federal benefits question

I'm no expert, but my thinking is that a charitable contribution reduces your Federal income tax liability if you itemize rather than taking the standard deduction. So, it could reduce your taxable income, but not your income. Your question is a good one, and I hope you can find an answer...

Time for a Replacement Van. Struggling...

Just read that the annoying hump between the seats is part of the StabilTrak system. We use that space for a variety of purposes, so may need the additional 20" van length to compensate for the loss. Alternatively, once the accessory console is removed, perhaps a level platform could be placed...

Time for a Replacement Van. Struggling...

Test drove a "stretch", 9-passenger conversion van a few days ago. At 20', I can't decide whether the 20" additional length is worth 1) the extra money, and 2) the extra hassle of driving and parking. It's surprising how much more difficult it seems to drive. Tomorrow, I'll get out the...

    24/7 Chat About Anything

For the first few years one of my kids performed at Ren Faires, I worked concessions to be on site, as she was still quite young. There were, of course, no registers and all the youngsters had to be taught to make change. I had had some practice with that, because that same kiddo struggled...

    Power station questions

Oh. I forgot it might be in the freezer. I'm in no hurry, so it's okay if you need to wait 'til Spring. Thanks!

    Power station questions

May I ask a big favor? Would you be able to measure the height of your fridge from the bottom to the top of the open lid? That would be very helpful.

    Kayaks

As Maki mentioned, the water temperature is the factor. My kayaking instructor pointed us to statistics showing that many hypothermia deaths occur when it's 40 degrees. In part, that's because people aren't prepared to be cold (wet, exposed) at those temps. With a skirted cockpit, the roll is...

Bacon AND coffee? Be there tomorrow! (LOL)

    Partial Subfloor to Anchor Galley?

I probably will not be building a cabinet, but really appreciate the reminder about cardboard mock-ups! I saved a screen door box for just that when I briefly contemplated a full self-build. It will definitely be helpful. (I would not make a fitted garment without at least one muslin, after all.)

    Partial Subfloor to Anchor Galley?

Had not thought about the sink depth. It seems a hole could be cut in both the counter and the cabinet top to accommodate it. Scribing is not something I knew about. It looks like it could be useful here. Likewise, cleats. I only found info online about French cleats, which I don't think is...

    Carla's Camper

Yep. It's a closed system. When urine is flushed, your chemistry/biology mixes remains in the food chain, too. The coffee you drink might give some minnows a buzz... I do it daily, but there is something just a little insane about defiling our fresh water with our waste. I agree that toilet...

Very nervous - deaf and trans trying to get my recently acquired van into good shape for vanlife

I was in a cafe recently, where a middle-aged man would have felt naked without a sidearm. Picking up a to-go order, I just hoped like anything the waitress wouldn't drop a tray! Nice folks, decent food, but I don't think I'll be back.

Refilling Coleman bottles from a 5 pound tank?

An initially expensive option, but I've been very happy with this 5 lb./1.2 gallon grab-and-go bottle: https://ignik.com/collections/refillable-fuel It is easily/economically topped off at Tractor Supply, etc. and is not nearly the hassle green bottles are. It "feels" safer to me, too. (I've...
