New NYC transplant w a dream

TX doesn't have BLM and very little NF land. It's not a good place to boondock. I did camp on private land (owned by a huge outfit) SW of Terlingua last winter and no one bothered me, but you never know. Go a little further west, and it's a whole nother world. Free camping everywhere...

    Gray water... why?

Usually no one is camped within miles of me, and any trace of my being there quickly disappears. Even at big gatherings it seems like a non issue to dump a little water on the ground. Sure, if you are at Walmarts and truck stops, that is something else.

if you need this much watts, do this

I just saw your intro thread and replied. I'd never get a minivan for vagabonding, but it would work for people who don't venture offroad. So are you planning on 2 different homes, or just traveling with the seasons in your rig? Getting back to the electrical question, it doesn't sound like...

New NYC transplant w a dream

This is interesting info when combined with your other threads! You said you saw yourself "camping" at Walmarts and truckstops... and that you'd be on a motorcycle if you could. I may be wrong, but I have a feeling you'd like to camp in the boonies... which is very easy to do in the west...

Where to park, camp, shower etc

I've driven through SD a few times, but only camped in the Black Hills. It'll be getting cold there pretty soon I expect, and if you travel with the seasons it makes vagabonding so much easier. If you head further west and south there will be massive amounts of public land you can camp on for...

    Gray water... why?

All mine goes on the ground. But then, I camp in the boonies. The biggest hazard has been attracting killer bees, which has happened a couple times.

if you need this much watts, do this

This is important for deciding what you need. Why those places? Every state west of where you live has millions of acres of public land you can camp on, and you can find nice weather all year by moving around. IMO, it's best to start minimal. If you like to motorcycle trip, then it seems that...

Best coffee maker for van life?

I have a normal sized Aeropress that was gifted to me at xmas. On another forum all the campers raved about how awesome they are. Never used... it's too small for me. I use a Bunn industrial basket, with the appropriate filters which are quite cheap in bulk. Heat water on a little propane...

if you need this much watts, do this

I don't even have one of those... or a cooler. I only use electricity for a laptop and a couple lights, and to charge the phone and other gadgets. Maxxair, yes! No to all the rest except maybe a fridge... If you want all the junk that everybody else has, then you are kinda stuck with...

Dating and van life. How does one go about this?

^^^^ Yes, a cute dog that is friendly and well behaved makes a huge difference! Or so I've heard... I like other people's dogs... but no desire to own one.

Nah, Ben is a burned romantic who still wants to dip his toes in the fire... Which reminded me of a couple of good songs....

Dating and van life. How does one go about this?

If you are willing to PAY for dinner, and it's a nice restaurant... I think you'll be fine! Maybe wear a sign to that effect... see what happens...

Oh gawd no... I wouldn't be surprised at all!

Dating and van life. How does one go about this?

I have near zero casual dating experience. But if that is all you want, it should be about the same whether you are a vagabond or not. Decent looking, confident, and $$$ to spend on them... no worries. :p I had 3 long term relationships while living in a wee Toyota truck. Obviously, they needed...

Cheap weekend homestead outside BIG 500K population city?

The "roads" aren't new... they've been there forever. The difference is that there are just so many people using these noisy things now. What I mostly see is people who tow them behind their monster RVs. I have no trouble finding a secluded spot that is miles from where they park their "home"...

    Service TPMS Light On....Promaster

On my RWD vehicles I usually do it once when they are about half gone. Front tires tend to get more wear on the edges from turning, and swapping front and rear gives a little more overall life. Frequent tire rotations only mask things like poor alignment and other issues.

Cheap weekend homestead outside BIG 500K population city?

If you want peace and tranquility... gotta go where other people don't. It sad how hard that is getting. It's not just more people, but the public lands favoring the use of these damned SxS and similar ATVs.

    Service TPMS Light On....Promaster

I'm not going to be helpful, but... TPMS is a POS like the other federally mandated crap (like traction control). My light is always on. I have aftermarket wheels also, and did not install the TPMS doohickeys. Offroad and aired down they'd be completely useless anyway. Instead I bought a set of...

The BLM’s “ Blueprint for 21st Century Outdoor Recreation ”

As you are probably aware, the BLM heavily promotes this form of recreation! If you've ever been around Picacho Peak north of Yuma, that is a stunningly beautiful area where I used to camp often, and there'd be no one around. Now it's an OHV park... not kidding.
