    RTR?

Wow.....I didn't know the area was that big. Thanks for the info.

    RTR?

I was thinking of going to RTR 2024 but it may be too populated for me to enjoy...kind of like going to Sturgis. Like others, I want to see what other van builders are doing in their rigs. I have seen so many professional build videos........they look like camper vans you would buy at RV...

    cooking simple food in car

I'm old school and I use my butane stove. It will heat up soup within just a couple of minutes. I usually cook 3-4 hamburgers before I depart on my trips and vacuum seal them. I can warm them up in just a couple of minutes as well. I once placed a burger in a zip lock bag and placed it on my...

    What are you doing today?!

I hooked it up and it's working good. :)

    Hello--First time to post

That is where I live now, Nebraska....but in the central area near Grand Island. When I traveled through TN the last time, I saw a house for sale that sat on a small ridge that overlooked several mountains and valleys. It was breath taking.

    Social security

Each of you have your own situations and deciding when to draw seems to work best for you. The idea is to do what is best for you so that you enjoy your "golden years." We choose to retire early so we can do that very thing. Traveling in my van is something I have wanted to do for a long...

    Fold down bed

I like the cot idea. Lightweight and folds up. Thanks.

Mount walls straight to the metal frame?

I did attach my siding directly to the metal frame. Adding the slats would have allowed for eaiser mounting of the siding, cabinets, and lighting becuse its easier screwing into wood then metal.

    Fold down bed

I never heard of using t-tracks, something I will look.

    Hello--First time to post

What kind of handy work? I've been through Knoxvill TN several times. I told the Mrs. we should move to that part of the world.

    Social security

Not only is not waiting free.......you risk losing thousands of dollars if you pass away early. What if you wait until age 70 to start drawing it and you die at age 72. You would bank only $67,000 plus you would reduce your retirement accounts. If you started drawing it at age 62 (assuming a...

    Fold down bed

I had an A frame camper before I switched to a van. Not a big fan of towing trailers. I once found myself on a small road that ended in a huge wash out.....leaving me to back out for over a mile before I could turn around. :cautious:

    Fold down bed

I did consider those options......but we have always found folding cots uncomfortable. I was looking at a folding couch design on Amazon (Heyward 4.5” Trifold Sofa + Mattress), just haven't thought of a way to build a support frame to get it off the ground.

    Fold down bed

I am looking to add an extra bed to my van build for guests. Plan A is to make a murphy bed that would be mounted on the wall behind the the driver's side seat. Then when I need it, I would simply drop it down. The problem is that it would block the window when in the stored position. Plan B...

Feasibility of filtering gray water for drinking again, using a gravity-fed filter system?

If I found myself stranded in desert......dying of thrist......and absolutely no other options......then maybe. Otherwise......dump it.

    Social security

My wife applied for SS when she reached 62 and I plan to do the same thing next year. I paid into SS for over 40 years and I feel that is is rightfully mine. I do consider it a pension plan even though I know it really isn't. It makes up a good share of our retirement funds, allowing us to...

    What are you doing today?!

I strapped down my Yeti ice chest to avoid it moving around last summer. I found it difficult to drain the melted ice water so I am working on running a drain tube through the floor. Fall has arrived in Nebraska, only 46 outside so a little brisk.
  18. Tony's Dream

Hello all. This is my first day here, and also my first post. I am single, 75 years old, and on SS. Also live in the blue ridge mountains of TN.

Welcome to the site. I started out in a cargo van and traveled over 20,000 miles in it. It was enough space for me, had great gas mileage, and was very easy to drive. The only issue was not being able to stand up. As a disabled veteran, having to lay down on the bed and pull my pants on was...

Do you feel less stable in a hightop van?

I just bought a high top in August and returned from a 4,000 mile trip to Maine. I didn't experience any issues with wind. Granted, when a semi passes or you are directly behind a semi you do feel the wind but at no time did I feel afraid it would over turn or loose control.

    Sleeping with the door open

I recently added a screen to my side door which allows me to leave the side door open and keep the bugs out. Has anyone slept with the door open at night for comfort or is security a major concern for you?
