Should HOWA be a Membership Organization?

A couple of questions: Who would be eligible for membership? Who rules on an individuals eligibility? Once eligible, what is required to become a member? What are the rights/responsibilities of membership? Membership qualifications in small organizations is important because it doesn't take...

    Electric Fridge Selection

I have a 120V 'dorm' fridge. The installation instructions explicitly call for 2 inches of clearance on sides and top, and 3 inches in back. The back, left side, and top get warm when the fridge is running.

No Insulation [Snowbird Hightop Van Build]

If your build is simple it won't be hard to add insulation later. Back in the '80s we used magnets to hold blankets on the wall and ceiling of a Chevy van for ski trips. Remember it worked well.

Keeping warm in sub-freezing weather, using only a tiny amount of fuel for heat.

Any thermal mass will do; don't have to be expensive. My grandma would heat her iron on the wood burning kitchen stove for us kids at night, wrapped in a couple of towels. I have known guys that use plain, old rocks. I use a modern version of an old fashioned hot water bottle. Water is easily...

    Hot Topic: Social Security

I was going to reply to the political squabble that was deleted but I still think it is appropriate. Spiff's rules: Never let one side of a debate define the other side's position. If you are not getting your news from multiple perspectives, you are not being informed, you are being...

    Hot Topic: Social Security

Why? Because for at least 30 years the SSA has been collecting less money than necessary. And they have been investing in a vehicle that hasn't kept up with inflation. Who? SSA has been sounding the alarm bells and both political parties have had full control of the legislature and...

    Hot Topic: Social Security

I think you are correct. They see a system that will collapse under its own weight eventually (nothing lasts forever). And someone is going to be left with nothing. That won't fix anything (although I think it should be done). SSA did an analysis on that a few years ago and the conclusion...

    Hot Topic: Social Security

A number of persons here have stated directly or inferred that 'Social Security is going broke' is a lie yet offer no supporting evidence to rebut the SSA's own analysis. Without support it's just an uninformed opinion. The Social Security Administration knows how much they have in reserve...

What I said is SS as currently set up makes it difficult or impossible for the working poor to create wealth. So grandma doesn't have any additional savings to fall back on and can only rely on SS. It's still a pyramid scheme: you are taking money from people on the bottom (workers) and paying...

Then what would you call it? Workers coming in on the bottom pay in so retirees at the top get paid. Age ordered pyramid that is top heavy (unstable). Same in government. Sometimes only way to avoid the tyranny of the majority. Both parties have used it. I took a hit in my 401K last two...

    Hot Topic: Social Security

The money we paid in plus interest will be gone in 14 years. After that SS has to take money from someone else to pay us - and that is a pyramid scheme. Like what unions do to get their way. It's a pyramid scheme and pyramid schemes eventually collapse. Gen X is smaller than Boomers, Gen Y...

Here is the official Social Security Administration report for 2022: https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/TR/2022/ from it you can download the full report and supporting documentation. Knock yourself out. Here is a relevant graph from report: Note that the $2.75T reserve is gone by 2035. I await rebuttals.

In about 10 years social security will go bankrupt. Politicians have been kicking this can down the road for at least 30 years. None of the solutions will be politically popular. At least someone is acknowledging the problem and proposing a fix (its a bandaid). All industrialized nations are...

How to store bags of poo until you can dump them at a trash receptacle?

Lots of threads in the 'Personal Hygiene' forum. Not mixing is key. Pee in a laundry detergent jug. Poop bags stored in a 5 gallon bucket with Gamma Seal lid = no smell.

Pillows — best kind for different situations?

I have never gotten an inflatable pillow to work; bouncy, too cold, not comfortable. I even ditched them for backpacking. YMMV I have used a Chillow when temps are above 75ºF for years; probably better solutions out now. It took me a little while to figure out how to use it.
