Looking for ideas ... my poor bus!

VyckieG the biggest consideration to winterize a rig is the water....  Water expands when it freezes and can cause serious damage to water tanks, radiators, and engines.  So.. dump all the water from the fresh water, gray, and black tanks and put the special antifreeze made for RV water systems...

    Transmission fluid

Not difficult to do... just messy because there are no drain plugs in the pans. Remove about 12-14 bolts and the entire transmission pan comes loose then swoosh all the fluid comes out at once. It tends to splash all over. I usually leave a bolt or two in place to help slow the flow by...

Howdy from Houston, Texas for now ...

Welcome Cajunwolf,  You have a wonderfully positive outlook considering all the adversity and life experiences...   That's how I roll too...  You're my kinda people!

    What could you build?

Certainly unusual... Looking at the pictures I had this as the first thought in my head. Just live in front and you can use the back to haul goats... We shall call it... the 'Goaterhome'... Lol! Either that or put a porch swing or Bbq smoker on the back... it could be perfect for a...

Should I buy this RV? (San Diego, CA)

That video was fast and jerky, and it was hard to see details even stopping frame by frame...  The things I could pick out were:   Some very serious delamination on the right front overcab. Those outer walls are made of a thin layer of fiberglass (about 1/16") glued onto 1/4" plywood.  What...

    Hello, I'm new here

Hi Orangeclouds, Welcome... Where I grew up we used to have lots of orange groves. Seeing your username reminds me of those memories from when I was a kid, the smell of orange blossoms, and the windfall wars we'd have while playing in the groves.

    GMC Savana mileage

I vaguely recall somewhere Bob mentioned his hi-top affected the mileage... It would be good to know that too...

    12v circuit issue

I'm with HDR, start at the house batteries and compare voltage with the socket, both static and under load, both plugged into shore and on batteries alone.  The 120v and 12v systems are essentially separate except at the voltage converter (not inverter), and that should provide a good steady...

    Ford vs. Chevy

I have a 1997 Ford class C, 6.8L, 8-9mpg average on 3000+ road trip, best of 11 at 55mph on flat.  They are thirsty beasts!  About 2004-ish onward they have problems with cam phasers, timing chain tensioners, and a weird shrouded sparkplug design that breaks off when removed.  The Ford twin...

    Lesson learned

I'm thinking why...  Why leave people wondering when you can simply remove all doubt.  Just put a coffin up there to carry your stuff around.  If people ask about it just laugh maniacally and offer to show them what's inside...

    Who's behind your user name

Old but fun thread to read...    I actually have several monikers...  Doubleone comes from auto racing.  My first stockcar was number 535.  We were very low-buck and hand cut our numbers from shelving paper but quickly discovered that 3's and 5's were harder to cut, so we decided that 1's would...

Newer higher mileage vs older low mileage Express

You can tell a lot from visual inspection and gut feeling. Lift the hood and look for signs of previous service, labels on hoses, rebuilder tags on engine blocks, stickers on alternators, etc. A quick fluid check can tell if it's been serviced, clear sweet smelling coolant (not rusty or dank...

    Walmart stealth bathing

I totally agree, there's nothing wrong with staying clean, especially in light of a storm evacuation situation, but it's just the 'optics' look really bad... and we certainly don't want to piss-off any Walmarts.  In my former career, we used to get complaints of transients going into the...

A LA Times article. I think LaVonne is a member

LaVonne was also interviewed on the radio earlier this evening...  She spoke very well, represented the van community in a noble fashion, all while getting a positive productive message out.  She went up against a very tough interviewer and shut down a lot of his silly arguments.  Proud of you...

Is silicone sealant OK to use inside a van?

Cheap RTV silicone has a strong vinegar (acetic acid) smell while curing; it might irritate nasal passages but otherwise won't hurt you. Just choose a 'low VOC' silicone product and it will have very little odor. I would avoid latex caulks because they are less flexible, don't handle heat or...
