New Horizon

Photobucket link Don't have too many interior pix yet. 1/4/16  Picked up some Command hooks and a big piece of black microfleece from the cheapo fabric place.  Cutting it in two gives me two options:  wrap it around the front for maximum interior space, or use one piece to seal off the front...

Best Online Bits N Pieces ?

I need new gasket / weatherstrip for the rear barn doors of my van.  I'm assuming this is relatively universal, and my experience has been that it's cheaper to buy stuff online than at the local spots, certainly cheaper than local RV stores - (omg, $34 for campa-chem?  Really?)  Do y'all have...

2002 Chevy Express High Top Van

Driving a high top or rv is definitely more work.  The two I have had just don't hold the road the same way a car does, it requires more concentration or things may drift, especially in wind.  That said, it's really not that big a deal on a day to day basis.  I used to be able to go close to...

    wagoneer is a weather whimp

Do you have an auxiliary battery in the car? I have a small 48W 12V car blanket, it's certainly not hot, more of a warming pad, but it's helpful and not out of range for my battery.

    New Horizon

Captain's Log, Star date 1/3/16; got the baby home. Water pump was replaced along with a valve, hot water no longer appears to be leaking. They also tightened and re-sealed top. There is still a Groink noise in the driver's corner until the van is warm - windshield not seated quite right...

Gotta love it, looks like someone ransacked their kitchen circa 1968 for this beauty.

The throne.  I don't know if Hub is amused or appalled that it's right smack in the middle here, but I think that's fine - lots more storage without having to move anything to use the potty. Not so thrilled that it's *carpeted*, but I'll get to that.

tell us what your first night of van dwelling was like

My first night camping in the Matrix wasn't as harrowing as so many of your experiences, I was just on a road trip, not in any sorrow.  I pulled into a Denny's, had dinner and folded myself into the back of the car with the windows half open and screened.  Woke up to a torrential rain...

Whos has the best van setup?

Funny, I'm just a little over 5' and probably starting to shrink :s and I have come to similar conclusion.  The biggest struggle in choosing a set-up is that my husband is about 6', but he's not really into the whole mobile life thing (yet!) so ... get a vehicle that fits me, or get a vehicle...

    New Horizon

Ah! I was tired. Thank you. It may be a fluke but this one does look like someone cared, little home-made details like a charming if completely useless wooden cup holder. And I don't mean to brag, but I have a VCR and TWO tape decks! The cassette kind, no 8-track for me. For my records...

    Doing #2 in a car

Re pooping ... I have a wide mouth thermos that I set on the floor of the Matrix behind the driver's seat for midnight pees. It's short and not tippy, and completely watertight / odortight. With the seat all the way forward I am small enough that I can crouch there. In a true emergency I could...

Thoughts on this van? Ford E350 extended high top.

lol Bob, I will, but I was actually surprised and reasonably pleased with 15.6, someone had said to expect 10-ish.

Thoughts on this van? Ford E350 extended high top.

Ok ... wow ... this may be a fluke, but driving back from Phoenix I put in 135 miles, and when I filled up again at home, I'd used 8.63 gallons of gas. That's 15.6 mpg, all highway.

    Best Heater for Car Overnight?

If you are bringing equipment to cook, a hot water bottle is a nice $5 addition (you can also use a Nalgene bottle or really anything that's totally watertight and boiling-water proof).

    Gromets and Snaps

I was camping in a rental camper a few months ago, and it had a very simple (and cheap) arrangement for window shades.  Big pieces of canvas snapped on at the top of the windows that would roll down and then get snapped onto the vehicle at the bottom of the window, the snap arrangement was...

Thoughts on this van? Ford E350 extended high top.

My new one is a 1994 Dodge 350 5.9L V8 gas engine with a not-so-high-top. Not sure but I think that should be somewhat comparable? Hope to pick it up and road test the mpg on the way home within a couple of days, I'll post it.

Wool. Wool wool and more wool. Cashmere, angora, merino, snuggly sheep. Wool.

Lots of questing before I start to build for full time!

Is your Skil saw a circular saw or a jig saw? If it's already a jig, you can try either 1. getting a thinner blade, or 2. punching out the tightest part of the curve with a drill bit and then using the saw to extend it. Cutting a curve with a circular saw is a disaster.
