    WHat's your traction-adder solution?

***Required disclaimer... I'm a wannabe who's never done any sort of overlanding or traveling on forest roads.  I have no real world experience.*** I plan to live out of a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid w/ standard all-season tires, nothing special.  It has 7in of ground clearance (more than the 6.3in in...

Am I going to be drinking boiling water?

I am hoping "luke warm" is the hottest I'll see as I will indeed try to follow the good weather, but I am planning on a hybrid Toyota to give me a little more play to be where I want, whenever I want with A/C.

Am I going to be drinking boiling water?

Yeah, I would do whatever is reasonable (short of refrigeration) to keep things cool.  Maybe a tiny cooler with no ice to keep the water, outside direct sunlight.  I'll likely not be in AZ in the summer (:p) and following the 70s & 80s, but we all know sometimes Mother Nature can heat things up...

Am I going to be drinking boiling water?

Ok, so the post title is a bit dramatic, but for someone who plans to hit the road without refrigeration, and having always lived in the Northeast.... if I am in AZ in the summer by chance, and I have my water bottle out of direct sunlight, perhaps under a blanket or two... and I go to grab a...

How much did MPG drop when you lifted your vehicle?

Well on the cheap end, for a few hundred it looks like I can just add spacers, on the high end, I could go with full on coilovers.  It seems the RAV4 is much better supported with lift options than the Prius.  Haha.

How much did MPG drop when you lifted your vehicle?

Hrmm... well then if I lift the vehicle a bit, but don't touch the tires whatsoever, then would you assume the hit to MPG would be minimal?  You're only changing ride height, you are keeping the type of tread, the circumference, and weight of the tire the same.

    My map of all travels

Very nice! I hope to get out there as much some day. For those of you looking to make routes with actual Google maps, share routes, export them to various GPS devices, and have as long of a "route" (your year's travels if ya like) as you feel like.... check out http://www.routeyou.com  I use it...

How much did MPG drop when you lifted your vehicle?

I know manufacturers are making their cars lower and lower these days (I'm looking at you new Prius), in part because it improves MPG.  To my understanding, the lower the body of the car is, the less frontal area is exposed from the tires, thus less drag, and better fuel economy.   With that...

Handling income & taxes from multiple states

Yes, I understand to take precaution and check off as many things as you can to "prove" you live in a new state when your old state comes looking for tax money. :p  But best I can tell, if I no longer rent or own a dwelling in my old state, that goes a long way to saying "hey, I don't live here."

Handling income & taxes from multiple states

OK, reading a bit more, there are tests for statutory residence (you are proven to be in said state more than half the year) and then if that test does not fly, some states perform a domicile test where they look at where you bank is, where you receive your mail, where you voted, etc...

    Drinking Stream/Lake Water?

Boiling would be out for me.  Too time and fuel consuming.... heck I won't even have a stove with me. ::P And boiling would not get rid of metals if there are any. I took the time to write the Vermont Department of Health and here was their response: Also, when I googled the toxicologist's...

Handling income & taxes from multiple states

Ok, so working in other states than my domiciled state and reporting income, and paying taxes may be no big deal (thank you everyone for the info), I just need to look more into the "proving residency" thing for Florida.  I guess Id I am moving around the country to many different places and...

Handling income & taxes from multiple states

I plan to make my domicile in Florida.  Florida has no income tax, but I may work in other states with varying income rules.  For those of you working a job in a bunch of states as you move about the country, how do you stay on top of tax rules pertaining to reciprocal agreements between...

    Self inflating beds.

Just to put it out there.... "self inflating" is kind of misleading.  Through all the years of backpacking with inflatable pads, I've always had to add at least a few puffs into the pad to have it comfortably inflated.  GL!

    Drinking Stream/Lake Water?

From my research, a little bit of fluoride in drinking water is beneficial, but that's a topic for another time. Thanks for everyone's feedback.

    Drinking Stream/Lake Water?

So if there are filters out there.... am I the one wearing the tinfoil hat here? Is everyone else just filtering out the easy stuff with a sawyer filter in a stream and rolling with it?

    Drinking Stream/Lake Water?

mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), thallium (Tl), and lead (Pb)?  Maybe I'm missing some?

    Drinking Stream/Lake Water?

That's fair.  I see myself staying in a spot for upwards of a week or so.  perhaps i'd visit a spot repeatedly over the years, but year....I'd be mixing it up a bit, so exposure to one bad apple would be relatively spread out.
