    Power needs for the Minimalist?

I like the solar battery charger I saw on Bob's blog. Many things can run on small batteries. I did some comparison shopping after seeing the charger, and found there are an assortment of solar chargers. I can't remember which is which now, but there is a charger that can charge a laptop...

Solar power and electricity very well explained.

In my research (quite extensive and I still don't understand it) I read things about people who get a system installed and the installer did not use big enough wires and ran a length of wire too long -- thus loosing electricity all along the way. Between the drain of the inverter and backup...

    Color of your vehicle

There was a thread somewhere about what color would be best for a stealth vehicle -- and a comment was made that white would arouse more suspicion as they are stolen more often -- other points about white vans -- well -- I noticed a lot of full-timers have white vehicles -- and wondered if...

I'm thinking the metal poles would be the strength that stabilizes the poles simply by the strength of the metal. It would not bend upwards, which stakes serve the purpose of. If the frame of the structure was solid and the holding underneath the car was solid... it would be part of the frame...

Nice setup, kurbmaster. Wondering what might work to brace a structure on a hard surface-- I wonder if attaching a brace or pipe end under the vehicle (wouldn't need to be welded) -- screwed or tightly lodged into a metal strip, wrapped around anything underneath -- and running metal tubing...

@bob great wiring tutorial -- thanks so much As for the screen tents -- my brother had just suggested those screw-anchor posts, and is really a great idea Being a hopelessly recycling-type person -- I was going to find a toss-out screen tent and adapt it -- or regular tent and adapt -- to...

FOR WOMEN ONLY: Solo women and protection/safety on the road

At one time I carried a "church key" (steel beer can opener) that had a nice wood handle on it giving it a good grip. It doesn't look like a weapon but it can be a nice little face scratcher if it came to it. It also offered the "poking" option. Much better than fingernails. Fit nice in the hand...

    Car Inspection Videos

Very good videos on how to do a complete car inspection. This inspection was about buying a used car and the things to look for that might help reduce the buying price. It would also serve as a safety check for a car you already own. This guy also has a video about check engine lights. part 1...

FOR WOMEN ONLY: Solo women and protection/safety on the road

I was going through my tool cabinet and found an old putty knife... or is it a paint scraper...?? -- it has a 3" flat blade and on the side is a curved area like for scraping a large pipe...?? where did I get this thingamajig...?? anyhow --- it looks like a mean little tool with both ends of the...

The large water containers must be fed through a hose that can often impart a rubber taste to the water -- water that comes from a well or from a city water system. Some RVers have water filters on their tanks. Some keep their drinking water separate from washing water. I can lift gallon jugs...

Watching bindy&us's video link about rving reminded me of something. At some point people decide what level of comfort they hope to achieve while living full time in an RV. Some people want to take the city with them, and plug into electric, sewer, and water. Some want nature to be the...

@rays mom Hi -- I'm fairly new to the forum myself, and have found solid information here and some good people. If you visit some of the linked blogs of people that post here, you may well see a list of other blogs that they follow. There is such a variety of full-timers. There are women who...

how to (mechanically) prepare for travel

One thing that sometimes happens is that a wrong sized fuse has been put into a particular function in a vehicle. Heaters would take a larger capacity fuse???? You might want to check all the fuses to make sure they have the correct size. Also, I believe there are adjustments to transmissions...

how to (mechanically) prepare for travel

One good thing about "shunpiking" or "avoiding major turnpikes" is that you usually pass through some sort of town or farms where you aren't too far from a rescue if something goes wrong. It makes for interesting travel, I'm sure. There are many towns that extend the courtesy of a free RV park...

    SOLAR PANELS & EMP's

Something I learned about Hiroshima -- one of the few survivors in the impact area was a man who was in jail --the jail was made of very thick rock. I think of it this way, the more you know, the less panic you will have if something would happen. I have a habit of noting where EXIT doors are...
