I'm freaking out about actually leaving!!!

I heard a story once on the radio: (from memory) There were two brothers. One brother wanted to explore the world and the other brother opted to take a steady job, buy a house, and live like everyone else he knew. Well... according to the story... the guy who opted to play it safe ended up...

I'm not connected with any RTR going on Now

Seems there could be "get-togethers" by any group of members and campers who have formed friendships -- Then -- there could be "open invitation" get-togethers -- everyone invited -- and then there could be the Winter RENDEVOUS -- which even sounds like a bigger event, where the point is to...

now - August 10 - SuperMoon and meteor showers

If you want to see the meteor showers look for them now before the moon gets too bright. The moon will set around midnight. A "super moon" happens when the moon's orbit passes closer to the earth while it is in a full moon stage... making it appear 12% bigger...

    Hello -- Getting situated etc

Thx Bob-- that's what I like about camping around Mancos, CO -- four bars on my phone. I'm going to check out Bob Moore Reservoir north of town... albeit hwy 184 is under construction-- heard something about a music fest or amateur show or something near there. The RTR on the Gatherings folder...

    Hello -- Getting situated etc

Thanks for the tips, Bob. As a matter of fact, I had looked at Ridgway first-- to live there. Neat little town, I thought. Frankly, I wouldn't take the 550-- I'm hoping to limit white knuckle mountain driving. I might make it the round-about way in a couple of weeks, not sure. It would be great...

    Hello -- Getting situated etc

Hello Van Buddies !! Just in case anyone was wondering where I disappeared to -- well -- I'm camping near Mancos, Colorado. Very nice - except it is "monsoon season" and the afternoons are usually stormy. After this next weekend, the weather should be calmer. Looking at weather maps, it looks...

Another DIY idea to solve the AC problem (small, green, quiet)

I want to thank Bob for stepping into this conversation. I was beginning to have thoughts that -- well, -- that the point was to run people off of the forum -- with insults and insinuations. At one time, I, myself, had to overcome the temptation to think that everybody around these parts...

    half baked ideas

I do not agree with the suggestion to "ditch" your fiance. I think the idea stated was to get the best facts and info - so as to base any decisions on a good plan. Not many girls dream of being "homeless" as their goal in life. You need a good plan that makes sense.

    Snakes!

There are snake fences -- that will entrap a snake that tries to crawl through it. This is a page that helps avoid contact with snakes. Most info says that snakes want to avoid contact with humans and so a walking stick is helpful. http://www.wikihow.com/Prevent-Snake-Bites

    Single women hosting campgrounds?

Seems to me that these parks would provide a phone with a camera -- in order to send the evidence to headquarters -- with the camp host playing the watchdog -- and the park ranger handing out the tickets. There shouldn't be a "law enforcement" requirement to a hosting job -- just a watchdog...

    Been to Southwest Idaho?

Try a search on this website or their youtube channel: http://www.campsitephotos.com/ a google search brought up this -- which was informative -- http://magicvalley.com/lifestyles/recreation/thousand-springs-state-park-insider-s-guide/article_d5e4d56a-be67-11e2-b76d-0019bb2963f4.html "But if...

    My home is in trouble...

My brother is a master mechanic and has worked on machines as big as construction equipment -- without seeing the van -- and just giving me a quickie answer -- he thinks you can get what you need at a salvage yard and just replace the rusted struts. He's thinking it's a part, rather than a...

    The Build On The Fly

It's good to see a regular height van conversion. I've just finished my own bed frame (24" x "72" x 14") -- mostly from lumber at Home Depot from the 70% off pile -- I found several long heat-treated 2x4s -- rather than a board for the platform, I'm thinking of using straps, for comfort and...

    Can Vandwellers be considered homeless?

If you own your "shelter" -- you may actually be less "homeless" than someone who is paying a 30 year mortgage or paying a landlord. Do people say "I'm homeless and so I'm renting an apartment...?" -- no The truly "homeless" (using the common definition) live without security or protection, and...

    Cooking with a Kerosene Lamp?

This link is about wax lamps and stoves. Some notes are about carcinogens -- some notes are about how a burning flame helps eliminate harmful ions, dusts, etc in the air. http://zenstoves.net/Wax.htm

    Man, that escalated quickly

This idea is one of my favorites -- aquarium pump, circulating water through a copper tube that is coiled around the front of a fan -- natural cooling

WHO'S WATCHIN WHILE YOUR GONE ??

I've had stuff stolen from a campsite during the night, when we weren't 15 feet away, and with a campground full of people. Some kids drove in, zipped in and out with whatever they could carry. If something hadn't dropped and woke us up, we'd have missed the whole thing. A rope around the area...

To early to go to Denver?

Seems to me that the touristy areas will be hiring right about now. It might be worth watching craigslist for areas where there are a lot of job openings -- unless you really really love big cities, that is. Trinidad looks like a nice mid-sized city -- a pretty place close to really nice...

Got a van, but it's no dwelling... yet. Looking for advice, pictures attached!

I've seen one idea where an Airstream was insulated on the outside with a make-shift awning attached to the roof -- maybe 6" off the frame of the trailer -- which prevented the sun beating down on the metal. I'm hoping to do something similar, staking a tarp on one side and over the top of the...
