FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

While we should have been worried about conversion details, we wandered how we would make excellent espresso and latte in our van (with minimal electrical power)... We made our homework and we're happy to share the results today! Everything is hand-powered, except for the milk frothing that is...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

Here is a short article about the EZ-Cool installation. We debated a lot between the ez-cool coverage: 100% (over exposed metal AND over thinsulate) or only over exposed metal. We finally went for something like 75% coverage: this should provide some of the radiant barrier benefit while keeping...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

More development! We installed our water system. It's such a great improvement over water jugs! The downside is that we "waste" a bit more water because it is so easily accessible, but it's so much more convenient... Here is the full write-up about the installation...

    Roof vent fan

+1 for the "don't go cheap" advice. Leaks will ruin your van, and having to re-do the installation just sucks... We had our Maxxair for almost a year and we really like it. Favourite feature: the built-in rain cover. It's VERY nice having ventilation when it's raining and damp. We detailed...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

We're working on a bunch of small improvements right now. I guess we can say that we are making progress when our "low-priority" jobs are getting bumped up to "medium priority" :) 1- We finally got the electrical harness out of the way: 2- The water system is under way: 3- The Nature's Head...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

We finally managed to install a swivel adapter on the driver side. With the dual batteries option, we found out the Discounvantruck would not fit so we installed a SwivelsRus: http://faroutride.com/driver-swivel-seat/ Also, we made a review of both swivel adapters here...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

Yes! We're on the Ford Transit USA forum too: http://www.fordtransitusaforum.com/camper-vans-conversions/27770-faroutvan-148-hr-el-campervan-conversion-mountain-biking-backcountry-skiing.html For now, it's just strapped in the back of the van (inside). But we plan on building a sealed propane...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

Wow, we were featured on Go-Van today :o We're so into this project, seeing this with hindsight reminded us the last 8 months just flew by. It's crazy seeing Isabelle standing in this empty cargo van for the first time, we were so excited. But we had no idea all the work that was ahead of us...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

Winter has been mild recently, so we took advantage of this and performed some work inside the van. Here is the full write-up about the Sink & Stove Cabinet: http://faroutride.com/sink-stove-cabinet/ Happy Conversion!

    3M Thinsulate

We installed Thinsulate a few month ago. We've been using the van in the harsh Canadian winter (down to -25C). We're very happy with the Thinsulate performance. As the original poster mentioned, it is VERY easy to work with, no mess. It will conform to weird and non-flat surfaces. I'm sure...

Webasto Air Top 2000 ST B

Ditto here, we're using the Webasto Air Top 2000 (gasoline). We recently used it at -25C and kept us warm. It's nice not-to have to monitor the propane level (since it is tapped into the fuel tank). It does consume electricity (about 1.3A-2.0A on average) so you still need a decent power bank...

    Help with buying choices, please...

We use a separate inverter and battery charger. We prefer only 1 battery (avoid wiring them together). You might find some answers here: http://faroutride.com/ford-transit-camper-van/conversion-planning/electrical-system/

Help buying wire, fuses, and fuse box?

Owner's manual of appliance will tell you the recommended fuse size. Wire size will be affected by the wire length; it is specific to each installation. Use this calculator: (remember that length of conductor = positive wire + negative wire) http://circuitwizard.bluesea.com/ For Amazon links...

Bedroom Storage = check! We designed it to have many mini-compartments, we think it will help getting organized and that it will make it easier to find stuff. http://faroutride.com/bedroom-storage/ Cheers!

Meanwhile, here is our overhead storage cabinet. We still have to add the final touch on the doors and to hide the electrical harness, but it is functional. http://faroutride.com/overhead-storage-cabinet/ Cheers!

We also entirely re-written our page about the Electrical System Design. We tried to make it comprehensive for someone who is not very familiar with the topic. Did we missed anything (without going into too much details)...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

We're a bit late on the post, but here is our electrical system installation! We used it for a few summer week-long trips and it has served us very well so far :) The winter test will happened next week, throughout the holidays, while we will spend a week in the backcountry for some...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

The Webasto / Espar Diesel air heaters are susceptible of accumulating diesel deposit (a.k.a. “coking”) at higher altitudes because the ratio of oxygen VS fuel is lowered (i.e. the mix is too “rich” in fuel). This coking would eventually accumulate and lead to malfunction / loss of performance...

FarOutVan: Ford Transit 2016 DIY campervan conversion for MTB & splitboarding

Just a quick update on the Webasto. As others mentioned before us, it is quite noisy! To reduce the noise, we performed a few modifications. It did not drastically reduced the noise, but help a little. We say it's worth doing it. http://faroutride.com/air-heater-noise-reduction/
