    Newbie needs sage advice!

Don't commit that much money up front, ESPECIALLY if you are new to camping. But even if you are an experienced camper, you won't know until you've tried it for a while what YOU really need to be comfortable. I bought my then 17-yo cargo van for $5,000 five years ago. It's still in decent...

Need help planning to buy truck and Rv

Dunno if this would be helpful or not, but there's a book called Camp Like A Girl, which covers converting a van and camping full time for a person with multiple chemical sensitivities, available on Amazon. Personally, I'd stay away from commercial RVs. For the same amount of money, you can...

    Pirate Camp Winter Season 2022-23

It's been kinda spitting a bit for the past couple hours, but commencing what seems to be a steady rain - albeit pretty light.

No van but I lived in a 4runner for 3 years

Thanks. I have a 200 LiFePO and a 286 w residential panel on my roof. Plenty of juice here in the SW, but I spend a lot of time in the PNW, and have been toying with the idea of getting some flexible panels as well. Never thought of using a flex panel on top of my canopy!

Looks to me like you did a masterful job getting all those solar panels inside the car!

I'm not sure I even remember how to use a slide rule.

Dunno about other areas, but here on the west coast, many of the logs are shipped out, mostly to China I understand. So whatever else is true, those logs are not reducing the cost of housing in the US. Besides, as with most things, including food, the cost of the raw materials is one of the most...

    Amazon - No Longer Useful

My biggest problem with Amazon is the search function. Waaaayyy too many times, I get things I didn't search for at all. Sometimes I think their algorithm is to return 500 hits, no matter what you search for. Boolean terms used to work reasonably well, but no longer. Sometimes when I try to...

But apparently we're doomed to a spell of cooler, cloudier weather in the meantime...

    Break-in or theft

My understanding is that a Club can be readily sawn. The folks who stole my van carried a saw which they used to saw off my ignition, so they were carrying a saw anyway. I doubt if a Club would have helped me.

Anyone ever park for free at a fee based campground?

It depends on the campground. During the summer, I frequently shower at a Forest Service Camground. It charges a shower fee, and you don’t have to be a camper there to use the shower. There are other FS campgrounds with showers where you must be a camper. In Washington, if you have a Discover...

    free alternative to netflix?

Quartzsite is one place where a traveler can get a library card just for the asking.

Anyone ever park for free at a fee based campground?

I don't see it as a dilemma at all. I pay. IF the ranger is letting some folks stay for free, that's the ranger's business, not mine.

    Break-in or theft

Alas, not necessarily so. When my van was stolen, I remarked to the police that there were nicer, more expensive vans in the motel parking lot, which presumably would have had more expensive stuff in them. She said that thieves actually look for older vehicles to steal because older vehicles...

Nature Lover and friends keep in touch

There's not a thing wrong with that! I have two summer places, neither of which I own, but both of which I am welcome to stay at pretty much as long as I want. Good thing I have a van to live in, as neither place has any room in the house for me... The truth is, I am happier camping out in my...

I love serpentine! I have been finding it occasionally here at La Posa South, can't help but wonder where it is washing down from. In a previous life, I did a lot of field botany for various federal agencies in the Siskiyou Mountains of SW Oregion and NW Califrornia, where there are huge...

    Pirate Camp Winter Season 2022-23

Yes, I left the door unzipped. I'm sure the clam is fine, thanks for keeping an eye on it. Although it is probably pretty dusty in there! Probably leaving Anaheim tomorrow, may take a couple extra days on the way back in order to decompress. My brother is now fine, but I am frazzled! Thinking...

    free alternative to netflix?

I have NO idea what they are actually like - but Pluto TV offers ad-supported streaming, so it's free to watch.

    Netflix and VPN

I use my iPhone's hot spot to connect to Netflix. I tether it to my iPad to download movies. For reasons that are obscure to me, I cannot download movies from Netflix to watch on my Mac AirBook. It's apparently a Mac OS thing. My cell phone service is usually too spotty for enjoyable streaming...

Um, why would they tell me how to successfully spoof my address and get around their new scheme?
