Well, this is unpleasant. The library is accusing me of damaging a book, leaving "dried liquid damage" and "a bad smell," and has frozen my account till I pay a fine. I didn't do it, but since they threw out the book before notifying me of the complaint, there's no evidence one way or the other -- and no way for me to see if, for example, it looked different from when I returned it, or was already damaged when I checked it out and I just didn't notice, or was not really damaged. I appealed saying "I didn't do it" and they said "we'll lower the fine because it was an older book." Which is basically the same as calling me a liar, right? I pushed the appeal to the next level. (To their credit, they do tell you how to appeal.) I suppose I'll pay it if I have to, under protest, to avoid having some kind of delinquent debt on my record, but either way I don't see using them for anything but ebooks in the future.

There's probably half-a-dozen other ways it could have been damaged (if it was) -- including in-house, by a reader holding a drink bought in the vending machine in the library lobby.

I know it's just another bureaucratic hassle, but libraries are usually such reliably pleasant places! it's easy to assume they'll always be that way. Not just a place to get free books but a sort of community anchor. Another illusion bites the dust. Oh well, don't let the 'crats get you down, I guess! Thanks for listening.

Did you return the book in an outside receptacle? Someone could have poured something into that. I sympathize with feeling let down by something you feel "works" so well as long as you do your part (which you did). Ouch.

Yes -- that's definitely one explanation!
Seems like more people do weirder stuff all the time. Sooner or later somebody's gonna think of that.

One thing finished today. The little desk drawer, removable, work surface with a blue cutting mat adhered to the plywood. The drawer can be closed with that mini desktop left in place. It feels good to get back to some build projects after a winter filled with frequent high wind gust. 🙂IMG_0742.jpegIMG_0743.jpeg

Getting ready to move North to avoid the worst of the heat tomorrow. Quartzsite area has been fun, but it's time to slowly migrate north. Tentatively thinking Pahrump via Death Valley and then Great Basin National park and take highway 50 back towards US95 and up into Oregon. I have a part time job as a camp host for American Land and Leisure I need to get to. Temps in the 90's are my trigger to move.

That look very nice! Of course, if it was my room all that wonderful space and work surfaces would look like is just wrong just to clean and all. It looks like you will get lots of work done.
Are the front panels screening?

It was cleaned up before the photo because I was in need of some progress photos of the interior. I have my build projects documented on a different forum that includes fellow owners of my somewhat rare travel trailer make.

The panels in the doors are Phifertex, the color pattern is “Cane Oyster“. It is a mesh weave made of polyester threads coated that were coated with an anti microbial, non off-gassing PVC. It does not stretch. It is not a tight weave so allows air exchange inside my cabinets plus being anti microbial it does not grow mold or mildew on it. It gets used for sun and wind screens, placemats and the fabric in patio seating and outdoor rugs too. It is also light in weight compared to a wood panel. I have never seen it used for cabinet door panels but I have seen woven natural cane panels used in doors in houses and older RVs, that was a 1960s through 1970s thing. So lots of good reasons for my choice of Phifertex. I had already been looking to buy it new when I came across a large rug of the material in a Goodwill Store. I scrubbed off the damaged foam cushion backer but other than that it was in perfect shape as it does not stain and is extremely durable and wear resistant. The very substantial cost savings was worth the effort!

My sun screening roller blinds are a thin version of the same mesh material. In the daytime I can see out but people can’t see inside.

It was a hot day, 95 max. I retreated to the public library for the hottest part of it. I will do a repeat of that tomorrow.

But now the sun is going down and it is quickly cooling off. Going to be a pleasant evening for some patio time!

Getting hot enough here that even my cell phone was complaint about the heat. I put it in my fridge for some rapid cool down but of course there is no charging cord in there.

So needing a solution to this issue just before sunset I took a drive to Walmart, it is the closest store. I purchased a few of the soft gel packs people freeze and put in lunch boxes. I am not running my fridge in freezer mode but I put them up against the sides where the cooling liquid passes through the tubes. I will use one of those under my cell phone when I want to charge on a hot day, swapping out and back into the fridge as needed. I could even set one on top and one underneath creating a cell phone sandwich.. They gel packs will stay soft as they are not going to actually freeze. Where there is a problem sometimes you just have to think inside a box 🥶

That's a good idea. My phone has also been complaining. I have to wonder, though, what world the designers are living in when 90 degrees is too hot for a cell phone...

If you place it on its side and give it some airflow, it should do ok with dissipating heat if you don't have access to gel packs.

If you have to place it flat, put it face down, as the battery on most phones is located on the back. Keep it out of sunlight if possible, and if it's not possible, cover it with a towel or something to prevent direct sun heating.

Not a perfect solution, but every bit helps.

Great idea. If/when in a humid environment, I would stick the cell in a zip lock baggie and then make the sandwich otherwise condensation could leak into the phone and that is not good. Very humid here in Kentucky so when I use your trick, that's what I will do.

YUP! This! Don't lay it flat....the back area must have air circulation, makes a world of diff. on heat issues with phones. You nailed it :) Cells don't require a fridge HAHA :)

Also if one googles 'what to do when cell phone gets too hot' there are reasons like charger could be bad or alot of issues on this topic...so...just to cool it is never just the answer. It is mechanical, it is tech issues, it could be easily some of this, not to throw it in some fridge, smarter to find out real issues with the phone but alot of big use can easily hot up a phone real fast as all of us know :) In fact cooling it down rapidly on some very cold surface could cause more damage easily....so....use some smarts here everyone!

That is the plan I too decided on. But thanks for mentioning it so others can copy it.
