@Sternwake
Regards to fiberglassing the Lexan glass .
You could drill holes in the Lexan glass here and there so that the fiberglass from one side would leak through to the opposite side to were it would bond one side to the other through the holes.
Just a thought.

@Sternwake
I don't get the big deal about the Vetus mushroom vent , I mean it only has a 4" hole ,,,, port and polish ?
Why wouldn't of you just  buy a vent with a bigger hole?   I'm confused.

Speed control is the key ?  The key of what ?  Is it the key to less amp draw ( better efficiency ?  Or more to it

So do you run the 24 volt fan on 12 volts or 24 volts?

If you create a 24 volt house battery I assume that you have a option of running 12 volt and 24 volt appliances by connecting the 12 volt appliances across half of the battery bank and the 24 volt appliances across the entire battery bank.
Thanks

Mushroom vent only in limited sizes. Mine was originally purchased in 2001. Making due with what is already there.

Controlling fan speed also controls noise airflow and current consumption.

Pwm noctua industrial fans are the only ventilation upgrade i will seek from this point. And it's in the want category, not need. What i have now works very well.

I do not employ 24 v anything.

Great, thank you.

So, how did you manage to remove the fan blades from the motor housings on the SilverStones? I ordered several to get me going, and a (recommended) can of CAIG deoxIT, but I am afraid to pull too hard on these things. I really wanted to get in there and give them all a nice preventative soaking... I bought (2)181's. and (1)121.

They seem to be of nice quality, but I've not powered them up yet.

I'm thinking, perhaps hoping, that the industrial rated Noctuas will cope with my salty, humid, East Coast air better than other options, but electronics is not my forte. I need to do some proper research so I understand what I'm looking at with the myriad PWM options, and what goes where. It doesn't seem that bad; I will dive in once I get some other projects complete.

Actually, I'm looking forward to tinkering with these fans! I'm starting to understand The Addiction...

Caig has a few products. The D5 or D100 is for cleaning electrical conductive surfaces, the gold is for gold plated or dissimilar metal conductors that do not really need cleaning and the Shield, for protecting the already unoxidized.

I used the  Shield s5 spray on the motor windings and circuit board, and covered the wires where they attach to circuit board with dielectric grease as pretty much every single fan developed green corrosion here and either the wire broke or or simply corroded off when used as intake fans pulling in fog and salt air and condensation.  Hoping these measures are effective. Time will tell.

To remove the impeller, peel back the sticker over the hub.  on the 121 there is a little plastic washer which fits in a groove and holds impeller in place.  Very easy to remove with some tweezers, but also easy to lose. Take precautions.  Returning it is also pretty easy with the right tools, but a very small socket to press it down evenly makes it even easier.

The FM181 uses a very small Metal  Snap ring to fit in the groove on the impeller hub.  I basically made a tool from a set of very small needle nose set of Harbor fright pliers whose ends i filed down even smaller to be able to fit in the snap ring grooves and open it up by setting the hooks n the snap holes and opening the pliers.  A third hand would be helpful.

This snap ring is deserves all the pirates curse words you can think up when it goes flying off into never never land.  My AP182, I basically bought a new Kit with many many different sizes of snap rings to replace it, and needed it again on the fm181.

Again take measures to prevent losing this retainer, and some eye protection is likely wise too.

I mostly removed mine to turn my fan impeller black and trying to paint it evenly so as to not throw off balance.  Removing it does not really make access to circuit board any easier and one can spray the motor windings and circuit board without removing the impeller using the red stray on the spray can of Deoxit shield.

Not sure spraying the windings does anything. on all my failed fans the copper was still shiny.

One can also tape over where the wires enter the hub to further impede corrosive humidity.

The industrial Noctuas should not require any of this preventative voodoo.
One day....... perhaps by next summer.  As I said I really don't need to improve my ventilation any more, the Noctuas really are the only thing I could do to improve it without cutting new  bigger holes in my roof and getting  or making a larger mushroom type vent, and they could save some battery power too being 25% more efficient.

Perhaps Noctua might have upgraded their industrial offerings by then too.

I also became a bit addicted to these computer fans and the reason is that I live in a very hot apartment where heat is coming from the ceiling as there are some hot and not well-insulated pipes running through all rooms. I also own a Dodge Caravan converted into a sleeper, so I wanted to use my fans in both my apartment and car if possible. I also own a GoLabs 300Wh power station and want low-wattage 12v fans.

I hate noise and, therefore, I concentrated on larger and very quiet low-RPM fans. From my experience I can recommend the following 140mm and 200mm fans:

ARCTIC F14 Silent - 140 mm Case Fan, Ultra-Quiet, Extra Quiet Motor, Computer, Almost inaudible, Fan Speed: 800 RPM - Black/White - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01J4FUU7Y/

Thermaltake Technology Pure Series Case Cooling Fan CL-F015-PL20BL-A 200 mm 800 rpm - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00J0NZFIA - this one is not completely silent on 12v but practically silent on 9v. To switch between 9v and 12v I use "USB Boost Converter DC 5V to 9V 12V USB Step-up Converter Cable + 3.5x1.35mm Connecter For Power Supply/Charger/Power Converter" - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004118413025.html - or one of these power regulators - "5A 90W PWM 12V DC Motor Speed Controller Module DC-DC 4.5V-35V Adjustable Speed Regulator Control Governor Switch" - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001621688969.html

All above power regulators are completely silent with the above two fans, although I am 60 years old and my hearing is not so perfect anymore. But I still hear some other power regulators with some other fans... I tried couple of USB power regulators with 5v fans and they were really noisy.

So far I don't want to permanently affix any of my fans (I bought four 140mm and two 200mm). Instead, I use soft and self-adhesive Rubber Door & Window Sealing Strip to squeeze and hold these fans in my apartment sliding windows. Rubber allows you to affix a fan in many positions/directions.

(see dollar store or Walmart)

I use grills for all sides to make it safer for both blades and fingers, plus grills can be useful if you want to hang your fan. These fans can be attached and directed however you like, for example, with a thick green garden tie (rubber or plastic-coated wire) that can be found at dollar stores.

I also have a pretty powerful USB/battery OPOLAR fan. It is useful, of course, but very far from silent. I use it while I drive instead of my broken air conditioner, but I would hate to use it on a hot night.

Hopefully, this post will be useful for those who do not like noise.

Connected the two 200mm fans with mounting tape plus sturdy sewing thread. Each fan has small flat surfaces on two opposite sides and so they hold together very well. Both fans are powered by the shared power regulator (PWM) I described in the previous post. The maximum power is 6 watts and the minimum is difficult to estimate accurately, but it is clear that the blades rotate even at much less than 1 watt. At maximum power it blows very well and very quietly. At minimum power this thing can be placed one foot away from the sleeping body, there is zero noise and the wind force can be adjusted from practically zero. The protective grilles give many options for attaching or hanging the fans. Of course, you don't have to connect them together. If any component fails, it can be easily and cheaply replaced. But don't expect very strong and directional wind, these fans don't blow very directionally and not very strongly - but they are quiet and consume little power. By the way, this power regulator has OFF position. I inserted it into the pill case but that was not easy

It's also great for my big room in the apartment. I can hold it by my horizontally sliding window (which is a little higher than these two connected fans) and the blinds can direct the air toward the ceiling, exactly what I like, fresh air from above.

Occasionally, in place of sturdy thread, we use floss, dental floss.
That's a great idea! Although I accidentally bought a big spool of very strong thread at a secondhand store that will last me a lifetime. Well, in case I don't use it as a dental floss... Hey, this is really working out, thanks again for two great ideas at once!

Exactly what I've wanted for a long time: fresh air without any noise. Plus I bought at the dollar store for only CAD $5 a Smart Plug that works over WiFi from any smartphone - good for being able to not leave the bed at night.

P.S.
No, unfortunately I don't like the aftertaste after this thread at all. OK, I'll pass this bobbin on to my descendants, I must not forget to mention it in my will...

Strange, but looks like only one image per post works.
