Wow, I just saw this. I came to the forum with a question and was wondering why he wasn't listed as a staff member anymore.
When I was first starting out I messaged Mike because he said he lived in SoCal, several miles from where I was living at the time. Mike took time out of his busy schedule to meet up with me in early 2018. I was a silly newbie van life wannabe who didn't know anything and asking really dumb questions, trying to get set up in a minivan with 2 dogs. He was very careful to let me know he had a girlfriend... ha!
Whenever I had a question on the forum and messaged him he always answered very quickly. Yes, Mike was gruff but like others have said he had a heart of gold.
ALS.... My mother passed away from that at age 86. She used Patient-Assisted Death in Oregon 13 years ago. She had lost the ability to speak and it was time. Her ALS was quick, about 18 months. I guess Mike's was the same.
