Any advice appreciated on how to find places/campgrounds within walking distance of towns. Thanks Cyndi

you should be able to figure that out pretty easily using the GPS coordinates for where you want to camp, where you want to walk to, and Google maps.

In Quartzsite for winter camping there's a low cost for 6 months area in the BLM Long term visitor area. The sections called La Posa North and La Posa West are walking distance to the town of Quartzsite AZ. There are lots of seasonal jobs in the town and many persons who work those jobs stay there all winter. A bicycle would be handy for a daily commute and there are used bicycles for sale around the town.

Many/most towns have RV parks within city limits. However, IME, they aren't cheap. If you don't have an RV, then your selection is a lot more limited, as many RV parks accept only RVs, and not vans or truck campers.

If you're looking for free or cheap camping on public lands within a mile or so of a town - well, that's A LOT harder.
