I grew up around Volkswagen vans and always wanted one of my own. A few years ago I bought a VW Vanagon Westphalia to do the kind of traveling I remember from childhood. At about that same time the “#vanlife” craze was happening and I followed various social media folks who were living in their VW vans. Finding Bob’s videos and discovering there was a sizable community around the RTR and HOWA really caught my attention. My thinking was maybe these are my people? I am not quite retirement age but getting close. I still have a sticks-and-bricks life, but year by year am learning how to live for extended periods in the van during summer holidays. Winters are cold here in northwest Iowa and I foresee a day when I can go full time in the van and spend those cold months boondocking in the southwest. I enjoy the company of other people but also appreciate getting away and enjoying nature in solitude. I imagine that probably describes many here! I have much to learn about vandwelling and I look forward to gaining knowledge from the experienced folks on the forum. Someday I may get the privilege of helping someone else with their new journey as a nomad.
