How can I secure my van's doors against someone breaking a window to reach in and opening the door?

For your driver and passenger door, route the seatbelt through the door handle and then lock the belt like you were sitting there. This was a recommendation from a truckdriver about staying safe when sleeping in your rig.

    Legal Threats to Medical Insurance?

Medicare Advantage Plans and Medigap plans existed before the ACA [I worked at an insurance company 10 years ago]. Only time will tell what is going to happen and even without the Texas judge, any law can be 'tweaked' at any time so one cannot rely on the current law to be around next year, 5...

One million Americans living in rv's

I read the article and think the title "The End of the American Dream, Life As You Have Known It Will Never Be the Same Again . . ." is off putting and from my perspective presupposes a bad thing. Who's American Dream is the writer talking about? The dreams advertisers and movie makers have...

Whoops! van and trailer submerged on Oregon coast

Driving on the beach in Gearhart Oregon is one of the things a lot of folks do. You need to keep your eye on the ocean because while the tide goes out it will always come back in and much quicker than you expect.

    For Christian Van Dwellers...

I haven't gone 'nomad' yet but while traveling I have visited a variety of churches. People have been welcoming and they have been good experiences.

    Smoke in the High Sierra

While this thread has been about smoke in the High Sierra's thought I would warn about coming to northern Oregon, around Portland, if you think this is the direction you want to come to get out of the smoke.  Visibility across the Portland metro area, which includes Vancouver WA area, is about 2...

Venting - New set of expenses

As you infer everything has a cost - financial or emotional. Regardless of whether you stay close to town or hit the road remember to take care of yourself and have a nest egg to cover the unexpected expenses. Good luck in the next chapter of your life.

    Bank Account drained

I have a debit card with my Credit Union [CU] and have had problems with my card twice and thankfully both times the CU was on top of it the same day. First time, 5 years ago, the CU called and asked if I was buying 2 PC's in Turkey, yep the country, - I wasn't - they stopped the transaction...

Can my car haul a lightweight camper trailer?

Sounds like the lease issue or potential issue has been addressed. As far as what to pull I would recommending looking at pop-up campers for motorcycles. In addition to the one already mentioned, there are several model that are essentially a tent on wheels but they are also very light.

    Anybody Temping With A CDL?

A couple of things - in Oregon the doctor has to be certified to give a DOT physical. Not sure if this is a state rule or a federal rule. You don't get to 'pick' your doctor anymore. Second - do you have flatbed experience? Flatbed loads are HOT right now and rates have been going up since...

    Cheap Oregon Camping Recom?

Along the Oregon coast you can always go up into the coast range and camp. Along the northern coast I would recommend going inland along the Nehalem or Wilson Rivers - both have county 'minimual cost' and state parks 'more expensive' along the rivers as well as forest service roads you can...

Your response to rising gas prices?

If west does not include California, Oregon, or Washington, then yes gas may be cheaper.  The 'cheap place' near my home, outside of Portland Oregon, has unleaded for $3.24 / gallon.  Just looked at gasbuddy.com - shows Costco has it for 3.05 but then you have to be a member, which doesn't apply...

    California Non-Resident Income Tax question

Not sure about California - I know that Oregon requires folks who work part-time in state and part-time out of state to file taxes on the portions worked in the state. Not sure what the percentage of in vs. out is. As noted in a previous post, you might what to check with a tax preparer.

    Portland overwhelmed with abandoned RV's.

Those abandoned RV's in Portland OR were left by a company who was tearing them down. They would take parts/pieces off of one and leave it in the street, no law against it, to be left for another time when they needed something else or were ready to get rid of it. There was literally blocks of...
